Grenade factory in back yard angers neighbours

The neighbours of a New Zealand man given a defence contract to make grenades in his garage knew nothing about it.

One woman says it explains all the noise and visits by army trucks to Bill Sharplin's Foxton Beach home.

Next-door neighbours Jo and Roger Wells are worried about the safety of the operation and think they should have been told what was happening on their doorstep.

The New Zealand Army has awarded Mr Sharplin a contract to supply it with 33,000 practice grenades.

Mrs Wells says she knew nothing of the mini factory in the five years she had lived there. "Still, it all makes sense now," she told the New Zealand Herald.

"The machines making all that noise over the hedge, the strange green boxes lined up against the back fence and the Army trucks coming and going.

"Now that we know our neighbour is making grenades - and we don't care whether they're practice grenades or ones capable of killing people - we're pretty upset."

They and other neighbours wanted assurances from the Horowhenua District Council, Occupational Safety and Health, and police that their homes will not be blown sky-high if an accident occurs.

Council regulatory services manager Mike Weir says he is satisfied Mr Sharplin's business meets guidelines which allow "unusual" occupations in residential areas.

OSH officer Ted White says Mr Sharplin's operation is fully licensed.

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.

Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, every single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen - had to be a girl. We should've known. Only women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.
